The first quilt was a family tribute made of thirty five boxes strung together. I have six brothers and sisters, (Jacquie, Robert, Carol, Mary, Ronald and Richard. Each row was made up of five symbols and fabrics that reminded me of their individual traits.
After the quilt went on display, I started receiving request from people to make tribute quilts representing friends, family, and people who had passed away. They send me pieces of old clothing or fabrics, beads and trinkets that belonged to or reminded them of the person. After they choose the appropriate Adinkra that they feel most represents the person. I create a box quilt for them. Due to time constraints I have had to limit the quilts to four symbols. One of the definitions of Adinkra is 'goodbye' or 'farewell' in Twi the language.
